Support Establishment: Understanding Support Orders
Melissa is a non-custodial parent. She is ordered to pay support for her two children with her ex-husband Ron.
Example Case # 1: Melissa
Income and Number of Children Involved
After allowable deductions, Melissa's income is $36,000 a year. Since there are two children involved and Melissa doesn't have any other support obligations, the approximate basic support obligation would be calculated as:
| Annual income after allowable deductions | $36,000 |
| 2 children involved: |
x .25 |
| Approximate basic child support amount | $9,000 |
Child Related Expenses
The court will also consider the child related expenses such as child care. Also, Melissa would be required to provide health insurance coverage for the children if it is available to her through her employer at reasonable cost.
